Climbing High

31/10/2017
Climbing High Cole p (Year 8) and Oli S (Year 10) took part in the national British Lead Climbing Championships over the weekend of 7th and 8th October. This is a huge competition attended by around 200 of the top climbers aged 12 to 18 from across the UK and they were both selected to represent their squad (Boulder Shack in Southampton).

The competition is one of the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) major annual competitions. There are 6 major national comps each year; 2 for bouldering (25 x 3 metres high climbing problems with no rope) and 4 for lead climbing (anything up to 25 metre high roped routes where they must ‘clip’ the rope in as they climb). This one was the last of the 6 comps of 2017 and was held up at Awesome Walls in Sheffield.

They were up against current GB Squad members and both of them performed fantastically. Cole finished 23rd and Oli came 24th in their respective categories (brilliant for their first ever major comp). They are now preparing for the Youth Climbing Series held over Jan – Apr next year and then into the nationals for 2018.

They have both spent half term training overseas; Cole has been with his coach and a group of other performance climbers in Fontainbleau (the ‘Home of Bouldering’ near Paris) and Oli has been climbing some of the fantastic limestone cliffs of Calpe in Spain with some of the Boulder Shack squad.

Well done boys and good luck.
