Musical Mastery

Musical Mastery On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, nearly 45 competitors took part in The Gregg School Music Competition Heats in the Hall.

First was the senior competition, with Johan H and Jasmine M gaining joint first place for their excellent musical expression and control. Mollie W came a close second with her assured flute performance of ‘Music Hall’ by Cecilia M. Stephanie D and Robyn A then
impressed with their woodwind performances.

Younger musicians were able to listen to the seniors, and then offered their own impressive selection of pieces. Well done to joint category winners Henry E and Christina M, who showed the best musical communication to the audience, and great promise for the future. Again our woodwind players showed fantastic technical control: congratulations Sophie K, Kaira FP, and Anna H.

We were treated to expressive performances on piano, exciting drum solos, and some very entertaining songs. Annabel C won third place and Holly B joint sixth for their vocal performances. Ben Wainwright won fifth place despite strong competition from fellow pianists, and Oliver M won joint sixth place for his expressive cello piece, ‘Vlatava’ by Smetana.

Well done and thank you to all the competitors – it was a real pleasure as Adjudicator to encounter the talented musicians in the school. For those who got commended or highly commended, you have every chance of being placed or winning in the future.

The Competition Final will be held at School on Wednesday 3rd May at 7pm, the music trophies being awarded by Dr Penelope Cave, International prize-winning Harpsichordist. Admission is free - please contact the School office to obtain your tickets.
