Child Development

This is available to all students in Year 10

This course is designed to offer students the opportunity to develop an understanding of the overall needs of young children and the social and environmental influences which affect their development in a contemporary, changing and multicultural society.

Everything from pre-conceptual care to the development of a child to the age of five years is covered.

    3 resource tasks and 1 individual task
  • a written paper 40%

  • Interaction with a baby simulator
  • Links with St Winifred’s School for child study
  • Guest mothers


The classroom boasts a new ICT area with an interactive wide screen television and fully resourced for practical investigations e.g. bottles for feeding.

We have two "virtual" babies which are cared for by the students as part of their overall assessment. You can read what some students thought of caring for their virtual babies overnight.      

All students are encouraged to achieve their best, opportunities being available to extend skills and knowledge through the use of ICT resources.
